One of the game’s finest MCs was born 38 years ago today. Tupac Amaru Shakur was given life on this day- June 16, 1971.

The multi-platinum-selling artist was best known for his controversial thug-life persona, and his hardcore yet poetic lyrics. Of course, 2Pac also saw success on the big screen, starring in such movies as Juice, Poetic Justice and Above the Rim.

Pac’s life was cut short in a Las Vegas drive-by-shooting on September 13, 1996. But even in death, Tupac’s impact is still felt across the musical landscape. His albums continue to sell at a good pace (for those who lost count, All Eyez on Me is 9X platinum) and his image helps magazines fly off store shelves, certifying his legacy and making him immutable over time. Here’s hoping you already knew all of that.
