NBA Baller Flat Broke

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Sports

Former NBA All Star Antoine Walker made $110 Million over his 12 year career and today he had nothing to show for it. Since being waived by the Memphis Grizzlies last year Walker has fallen on hard times. There was a warrant issued for his arrest in July, 2009 for writing a million bucks in hot checks. Apparently his steak of bad luck is apparently continuing.

Yahoo Sports is reporting that Walker owes creditors $4 million. It seems Walker got caught up in the trappings of a baller. Multiple cars, huge house for his mother, extravagant trips, expensive presents for coaches and teammates and lavish dinners were all par for the course for Walker according to NBA insiders.

$110 Million is a lot of money to blow but Walker is not the first or last athlete, actor or rapper this will happen to. A word of advice from CM hire a financial adviser.

Allen Iverson Returns Home

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Sports

Hip hop’s favorite NBA son Allen Iverson maybe in the twilight of his career but yesterday at his first public Memphis Grizzlies practice he looked much younger than his 34 years of age according to local reporters. The future Hall of Famer will begin his 13th pre-season tonite in Richmond, VA, not far from his hometown Hampton Roads against the Washington Wizards. After a rough season last year AI looks ready to prove the naysayers wrong and he will have a very early oppurtunity to do so. Memphis’ first game of the regular season is against his last team, The Detroit Pistons. As you see from the accompanying picture, Iverson’s trademark cornrows are back and Grizz fans are hoping his warrior spirit and killer crossover are too. No word yet on if Iverson’s rapping alter ego Jewelz will make an appearance to do songs with Memphis stars Yo Gotti, Ball and G or Three 6 Mafia.

Not So Fast Vick

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Sports

When representatives for Michael Vick leaked news of an agreement between the Vick and the athletic juggernaut many media outlets reported it as if it were a deal for a signature shoe and apparel. After all Vick was one of the few NFL players with such a deal before being cut by Nike in 2007. However Nike Publicist Kejuan Wilkins released a statement to the contrary today stating: “Nike does not have a contractual relationship with Michael Vick.” “We have agreed to supply product to Michael Vick as we do a number of athletes who are not under contract with Nike.” With as much airtime as Vick will be getting this season this seems like a win-win situation for Nike.

Hank Baskett Gets Ditched For Vick

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Sports

Bad news for NFL wide receiver Hank Baskett and his reality TV star wife Kendra Wilkinson. The footballer was released from the Philadelphia Eagles roster to make room for quarterback Michael Vick, who has been removed from the exempt list. When asked via telephone about his release from the Eagles Baskett said: “I’m not speaking about it yet.”

Baskett had one catch for six yards Sunday. He’s amassed 72 catches for 1,052 yards and six touchdowns during parts of four seasons.

The sequence of yesterday’s events, including Shawn Andrews being placed on injured reserve, could have positive outlooks for two QBs. Vick ifs probably elated that he can return to the practice field tomorrow, as he awaits his reinstatement for the Week 3 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The departure of Baskett could also open the door for veteran Jeff Garcia to remain with the Birds whenever Donovan McNabb is able to return from his fractured rib injury.

As for the future of Baskett’s career, only time will tell. Hopefully, he gets picked up by another team, because he and Kendra are expecting their first child sometime in December.

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. Gets Real

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Sports

Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s got a big fight this Saturday against Juan Manuel Marquez. Maybe you’ve heard? Kinda hard not to, seeing as how the boxer’s all over ESPN and HBO lately hyping the bout.

Mayweather also recently connected with Men’s Fitness magazine to talk about everything from why he returned to the ring to how he reconciled with his pops.

Here are a few of the October story’s highlights…

On how reconciling with his father led him back into the ring…
“My 10-year-old son was always asking to go to the gym. So my dad started working with him and I started tagging along. It was really special to see my dad working with my son. It was stuff you needed to get on a video camera. This ultimately led him to start going back to the gym, hitting the heavy bags and sparring. “I missed the fans and the atmosphere and I thought, as long as I’m doing all this stuff, I might as well get back into what I love, and that’s boxing.”

On his community initiatives…
“Someday I want a kid to surpass me. Someone who wouldn’t have a chance except for the programs that keep getting cut. And I want to start golf programs in the inner-city schools. I’m going to start playing too, now that it’s right outside my house.”

On the growing popularity of MMA…
“We got black fighters and Hispanic fighters dominating the sport. There are no white fighters in boxing that are dominating, so they had to go to something else and start something new.”

On pattering himself after multi-talented stars like Jaime Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson by pursuing outside endeavors outside the ring…
“We believe in rolling the dice and taking chances. I didn’t do it by myself. I had a good team.”

Michael Jordan: Before The Legend

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Sports

For us to run off the numbers to warrant Michael Jordan’s Basketball Hall of Fame induction would be senseless. You know what the dude is about- on and off the court.

When he –along with greats John Stockton, David Robinson, Utah coach Jerry Sloan and Rutgers’ C. Vivian Stringer- is inducted tonight, just take a moment to thank your lucky stars that you were around to witness the greatest pro athlete in sports history.

Over the weekend there will undoubtedly be loads of footage on MJ’s greatest dunks and finest fourth-quarter shots. All of that is cool. But this following video tribute is a little different. It takes you back. Before the Wizards. Before the Bulls. Before the Tar Heels. It takes you to Wilmington, North Carolina, where a legend got its start…

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Music, Music Videos, Sports

Mr. G. Funk himself, Warren G, will release his sixth studio CD, Tha G Files, on September 29.

The effort, which will be spearheaded by the Snoop-backed “Swagger Rich” and Ray J-featured “Crush,” will be entirely produced by Warren G.

Old-schoolers might recall that Warren G’s first album, Regulate….G Funk Era, dropped in ‘94. Sparked by the smash “Regulate,” the CD went on to sale over 10 million copies worldwide. Future albums Take a Look Over Your Shoulder and I Want It All didn’t sell nearly as well but Warren G’s camp says they both achieved gold status.

Striving for more platinum plaques, Warren G’s chosen “Swagger Rich” as Tha G Files’ first single. Enjoy the Cali rapper’s ride here…

Vick Officially Reinstated Into The NFL

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Sports

They say that everyone deserves a second chance, and apparently, Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the NFL, feels the same way. Goodell has allowed Michael Vick, former Atlanta Falcons quarterback to be conditionally reinstated into the league

Vick, who just finished serving a two-year sentence in federal prison for bankrolling an illegal dog fighting operation, could be back on the field as early as Week 6 of the 2009 NFL season. Goodell stated that Vick would be allowed to participate in training camp and the final two games of the preseason. He would then have to miss at least the first four games of the regular season.

These conditions are based off of the idea that one of the 32 NFL teams may actually be interested in picking up the disgraced quarterback. Vick who was once the highest paid player in the NFL with a 10 yr/$130 million contract is hoping to rebuild his image and career with a fresh start.

Vick released a statement through his agent, Joel Segal, saying, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to commissioner Goodell for allowing me to be readmitted to the National Football League. I fully understand that playing football in the NFL is a privilege, not a right, and I am truly thankful for the opportunity I have been given.”

Dunk On LeBron Finally Surfaces

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Sports

So, the infamous footage of Xavier sophomore Jordan Crawford dunking on LeBron James has finally surfaced. And while the slam is official, King James isn’t posterized like the media machine made it seem a week ago. Anyways, congrats to the kid. Enjoy these 15 minutes. But if my calculations are correct, the Cleveland Cavs star will get poked on at least three more times this coming NBA season. Folks, it’s a part of the game…

Jordan Crawford Dunks ON LeBron

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Sports

Xavier transfer Jordan Crawford discusses his dunk during a pick-up game at the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, OH.

I got my tape taken away that may have had footage of the dunk, but was at least able to shoot an interview on a fresh tape the next day.
