Nas’s Illmatic In Book Form

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Cartel

Nas is the latest rapper to have his lyrics spelled out and pieced back together in the form of a book. Writers Michael Eric Dyson and Sohail Daulatzai have collaborated in presenting the words of a young (age nineteen!) Nas in their upcoming book, Born To Use Mics. His 1994 album, Illmatic, will be the focus of the literary work. The album is one of the smartest debuts to be released in that era and it has remained one of the most critically acclaimed bodies of work in the hip hop culture, as a whole. The book itself will feature commentary on each track from contributors such as: Adilifu Nama, Guthrie P. Ramsey, Jr., James Peterson, Marc Lamont Hill, Mark Anthony Neal, Kyra Gaunt, Eddie S. Gladue, Jr., Imani Perry and others.

Esham Back For Hellaween

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Cartel

Detroit rapper Esham has been spitting evil bars since his debut in 1989. He has influenced Eminem, D 12 and Kid Rock just to name a few. 20 years later and he’s still representing the horrorcore genre of rap that The D made famous. His latest offering Hellaween: Pure Horror drops October 13th on Anku Media. Esham says the album is loosely based around the psyche of various characters in the vein of a War of the World’s type radio program.

Beans In Trouble Again

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Cartel

On the eve of his grind season, Philly rapper Beanie Siegel, has found his way into handcuffs once again. While on his way to perform a private show at a local bar, he was pulled over by New Jersey police. Siegel, born Dwight Grant, ended up in the back of a squad car on drug possession charges. Needless to say, his show was cancelled.

According to the Philly Burbs News:

Dwight Grant, 35, who is known as the rapper Beanie Sigel, was found in possession of under 50 grams of the drug during a 12:44 a.m. traffic stop at the intersection of Fort Dix and Main streets, said Sgt. Julian Castellanos, spokesman for the New Jersey State Police. The driver, Karl S. Dargan, 24, of Philadelphia, and another passenger, Justin S. Gaines, 25, of Westville, Gloucester County, also were charged with marijuana possession of under 50 grams.

Beans’ much-anticipated album, The Broad Street Bully, was set to be released on the first of September, just 10 days before his former labelmate, Jay-Z, dropped.

Beanie Siegel, one of the front runners of Roc-A-Fella Records in the late 90s, was almost as well-known for constantly getting into legal problems. This is simply the most recent blemish.

Damn, Beans just can’t stay out of his own way, can he?

Royce Squashes Joe Budden Beef With Meth

Posted by: Cartel  /  Category: Cartel

For the last few months, Joe Budden and Method Man have gone back and forth at each during taped interviews and on stage. The scuffle started with Vibe’s “Best Rapper Alive” contest when Slaughterhouse’s Budden had beef over Meth’s higher ranking in the tournament. Budden didn’t understand why the Wu-Tang Clan member could be considered a better rapper. Hip hop couldn’t understand why these two were beefing. Thankfully, the two grown men reconciled over the weekend. This is confirmed at the top of a recent freestyle by Slaughterhouse member Royce Da 5′9″ here…
